County Judge's Office
Policy Fellowship

MISSION
The County Judge’s Office (CJO) Policy Fellowship equips the next generation of policy advocates and lawmakers with local government public policy experience and leadership development opportunities.

GOALS

  • Create an opportunity for current and recently graduated students to learn about local government and gain invaluable, direct experience in public policy
  • Invest in the professional development of future civic leaders
  • Leverage Fellows’ research and analytical skills to support the County Judge’s policy team

OVERVIEW
Judge Hidalgo has a bold, new vision for what is possible through Harris County government. As a member of the County Judge’s team, Policy Fellows will work directly with Judge Hidalgo’s policy team, gaining professional and personal development experience. The Fellowship provides a hands-on experience for current or recently graduated college students who are passionate about supporting complex public policy initiatives.

Fellows are expected to commit 40 hours per week. Each Fellow will be paired with a member of the County Judge’s Office policy team, who will serve as a mentor, and Fellows will collaborate with their peers and senior leadership within the CJO on a daily basis. In addition to exploring the dynamics of public policy within the Judge’s Office, Fellows will also attend meetings with Harris County department staff to learn more about county government.

The Fellowship creates a unique opportunity for current or recent students to learn more about county government and the process of implementing policies that impact millions of Harris County residents every day. The Fellowship is a three-month paid program where students will gain exposure to some of today’s most pressing policy topics in Harris County.

Consistent with the values of Judge Hidalgo and the office, the CJO Policy Fellowship will host three to four current undergraduate/graduate students or recent graduates from a diverse set of cultural, geographic, and academic backgrounds.
