Harris County, TX, July 29, 2024 – Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo today attended the 60th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 at the LBJ Presidential Library where President Joe Biden was the keynote speaker. The historic event, hosted by the LBJ Foundation, honors the landmark legislation signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson on July 2, 1964, which outlawed discrimination and led to historic progress in advancing civil rights and social justice in the United States.
“It’s an honor to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 alongside President Biden, who has been a champion for civil rights during his Administration. While we’ve achieved historic progress because of the Civil Rights Act, today’s anniversary serves as a reminder that we have to keep fighting for those whose civil rights are still under attack and keep fighting to protect our democracy,” said Judge Lina Hidalgo.
After the commemoration, Judge Hidalgo accompanied President Biden on Air Force One as he traveled back to Houston to pay his respects to the late Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, who passed away on July 19, 2024.
“It’s fitting that we honor the 60th anniversary of such a landmark achievement for civil rights on the same day that our community honors the late Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, who tirelessly fought for civil rights. She was a fierce champion for justice, equality and progress, and her legacy of dedication and service continues to inspire us. It means so much that President Biden traveled to Harris County to pay his respects in person to Congresswoman Jackson Lee, who was such an important leader for our community and for our nation,” said Judge Hidalgo.
