Judge Lina Hidalgo Welcomes Curaçao to Harris County For Historic World Cup Debut

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas, June 14, 2026, Judge Lina Hidalgo welcomed the Curacao community to Harris County as the first World Cup match in Houston kicks off with Curaçao playing Germany today. Judge Hidalgo celebrated Curaçao’s historic Guinness World Record as the smallest nation ever to qualify for the World Cup, and she recognized Curacao’s status as a growing economic hub during a reception with international business leaders on Friday.

“We’re so proud to welcome Curaçao to Harris County and be a part of World Cup history together! The World Cup is a huge opportunity for both our communities. For Harris County, it’s our chance to show nations large and small that we are their gateway to the United States. There are so many areas for Harris County and Curaçao to partner on, and I look forward to continuing to build our relationship. I can’t wait to cheer on Curaçao today at the first World Cup match in Harris County!” said Judge Hidalgo.

During the Guinness World Record Ceremony today, Judge Hidalgo joined Curaçao Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas and Dr. Roderick Middelhof, Curaçao’s Minister for Economic Development to recognize the historic moment.

Earlier in the week, Judge Hidalgo had the opportunity to meet with the Curaçao business community and government leaders. Additionally, she met with dignitaries including Netherlands Consul General Lisette den Breems and Curacao Minister of Economic Development Roderick Middelhof, as well as business leaders from major business organizations including CINEX and the Curacao Hospitality & Tourism Association.

Curaçao’s historic qualification for the FIFA World Cup has created a unique opportunity to showcase not only the island’s culture and national pride, but also its growing role as a strategic hub for international business, logistics, energy transition, and regional investment.
