Harris County Judge Lina Comments On Decision Not to Seek A Third Term and Highlights Community’s Historic Progress

Harris County, TX, September 15, 2025, Today Judge Lina Hidalgo announced that she will not seek a third term as Harris County Judge. She also highlighted the historic progress that Harris County has made since she first took office in 2019.

“I ran for office as a changemaker to challenge the establishment and bring a fresh perspective to a Harris County government. I never ran for office to build an empire, which is why I am keeping my promise not to serve more than two terms. I’m so proud of our community and all of the progress that we’ve achieved together, from expanding early childhood education to making our community safer. To the voters, it continues to be an honor to serve as your County Judge. Our work is not done, and I am excited to see what we’ll achieve together throughout the rest of my term,” said Judge Lina Hidalgo.

Since 2019, Judge Hidalgo has worked to build a fairer and more accessible Harris County. Key accomplishments to date include:

  • Reducing homelessness by 21% since 2018, even when other communities saw homelessness increase during the pandemic.

  • Helping more than 60,000 families access high-quality, early childhood education. These programs include summer learning opportunities, programs for at-risk kids, workforce development and high-quality childcare slots. ‘

  • Making Harris County safer by investing more money in public safety than ever before. Harris County has invested 37% more, or $500M, in public safety since 2018. These investments include traditional investments in law enforcement raises and other criminal justice programs that have been proven to work.

  • Advocating for $1B in funding for the Harris County Flood Control District to address its maintenance backlog of flood control projects.

  • Achieving the biggest ethics reform in 50 years. The Flood Control District and the Engineering Department are now required to follow basic standards and have written documentation for the procurement process.
