Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo Highlights Harris County Public Library Programs for Friends of the Library Week

Harris County, TX, October 24, 2024 – Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo joined Harris County Public Library (HCPL) Executive Director Edward Melton, Harris County Friends of the Library (HCFOL) President Susan Greer, viral sensation John "Curbside Larry" Schaffer, community leaders, HCPL staff and more at the Barbara Bush Library on Wednesday to celebrate National Book Month and National Friends of the Library Week.
Friends of the Library is an organization that supports the library through fundraising, advocacy, and volunteer efforts. This week marks the 19th annual National Friends of the Library Week.
The event highlighted the incredible work of the Harris County Public Library. Earlier this year, HCPL was awarded the 2024 National Medal for Library Service, the highest honor for libraries in the United States for their programs, including their work to help people navigate the naturalization process, expand digital literacy and support early childhood initiatives.
Before yesterday’s event, Judge Hidalgo applied for her own Harris County Public Library Enhanced Library Card, a full-service library card and verified photo ID in one.  Hidalgo’s visit to the library also included participation in the library’s storytime program, where she read a children’s book to preschoolers, she even cast her vote in a pumpkin decorating contest.
