Harris County, TX, August 24, 2026, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo released the following statement amid the ongoing extreme heat advisories in Harris County this week: 

“We are monitoring the high temperatures and potential wildfire risk very closely. We’re working with our community partners including the libraries, the County precincts, the Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, and the Fire Marshal’s Office to keep the community safe. We’re also counting on residents to help us mitigate the risks to you and your family. Heat indices will continue peaking between 108-110 degrees through midweek. Harris County is not under a burn ban at this time, but Judge Hidalgo and county officials are closely monitoring wildfire risk as dry conditions are expected to continue until at least Thursday. 

To stay safe in the heat, residents should:

• Drink plenty of water, even if not thirsty. Avoid alcohol and consider drinking beverages with electrolytes to prevent heat stress.
• Apply sunscreen (SPF 30 or above) every two hours.
• If working outside, take breaks in the shade or in an air-conditioned space for at least 10 minutes, ideally every hour.
• Wear light colored and loose-fitting clothing.
